Collisions, 2011-2012

It becomes impossible to distinguish an accident from a violent assault. Maybe the point is precisely the ordinariness of such accidents in contemporary society. Amidst the work and play of everyday life accidents simply happen.

Crowd-Sourced Cloud of the Day: Meet undulatus asperatus, a cloud formation first spotted in Iowa in 2006. The cloud, which looks like the high seas, now has been photographed enough places that it is being considered for the next edition of the International Cloud Atlas. If the new formation is accepted, it will be the first classification discovered through crowd sourcing — that is, people snapping pics of the sky and lobbying to have them recognized.

Paige Smith - Urban Geodes (2001) - origami in wall

Artist’s statement:

“A parallel aspect of these ‘geodes’ in nature and in the city is they are always unexpected treasures. You might go hunting for treasures but you generally happen upon them during your adventures or casual interaction with the environment. I enjoy the fact that many people will not notice these, but some astute people will; that these will not last forever and the weather will affect them as naturally as it might in nature.”
